Covers: the most incongruous are the greatest

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 05:57 PM GMT [General]

I was pleased to hear that Radiohead did their cover of Neil Young's After The Gold Rush at the Hollywood Bowl this week (and equally pleased to see him wearing those excellent tight red jeans he wore at Victoria Park earlier this 'summer'). There is something about a successful cover version that can really lift a gig; a refreshing shot of something new, colourful and perhaps unheard.

Successful cover: Thom Yorke of Radiohead

On hearing, however, that Michael Jackson has teamed up with David Gest to record a pop album of Robert Burns' poems I was both entertained and horrified. Grotesque and lurid images of putty-faced Gest and the King of Pop dancing a Strip the Willow alone in a Scottish castle leered in front of my eyes. But I banished them and read on... David Gest, author of the superbly title book 'Simply the Gest', has revealed that Jackson is 'in love' with the poetry of Scotland's favourite bard and that 'he is our favourite poet'.

Perhaps the eccentric duo thought it was time to remind the world of Burns' lyrical genius, especially after he was dismissed as writing 'sentimental doggerel' by Jeremy Paxman. Or perhaps Michael wanted to get in on the British life that his family has experienced while allegedly shacking up in Devon.

But somehow, I can't quite see how moonwalking to Burn's classics such as  'Awa' Whigs Awa'' is going to work, nor Mikey J's unique vocal hiccup in 'Rattlin' Roarin' Willie', nor even dancing the Robot to 'Grace Before and After Meat'. Can you?

The pairing of MJ and the 18th Century poet is a queer one - not to mention Jackson and Gest teaming up (although they do, allegedly, use the same plastic surgeon), but on second thoughts, I think it might actually be hellzapoppin'.

Indeed, the greatest cover versions are the ones which are completely unpredictable and wonderfully incongruous. Do we want to hear Robson and Jerome's rendition of 'Unchained Melody' again? No.

Think of the magic Jimi Hendrix injected into Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower' a year after it was released. They had the Blues in common but the result was totally unexpected.Or Cat Power's rich aching grain in the tribute covers on Jukebox and The Covers Record. Her woozy cover of Hank Williams' 'Ramblin' Man' is unrecognisable but melancholy in a freshly lush way.

Or Ben Folds, Tori Amos and Alanis Morrisette covering Hip Hop beats. Or Nouvelle Vague's Bossa nova-style reworking of 'The Killing Moon'. Or Winehouse's 'Valerie' - which should keep The Zutons warm for years. Not to mention Nirvana's famous cover of David Bowie's 'The Man Who Sold The World'.

On the subject of bizarre covers, there is a yet-unknown indie/pop/folk band currently monikered Impala Can't Swim (I'm in the band. Forgive me), whose cover of Latino bum-shaker Ricky Martin's Livin' La Vida Loca and reduction of Outkast's Miss Jackson to a soft lullaby could be the best thing so far accomplished (by them). Watch this space...

So, no matter how bonkers the latest offering from the King of Pop sounds, the results will be fascinating. Carla Bruni covering Emily Dickinson; I'm snoring, Scarlett Johansson covering Tom Waits; dull, dull, dull, but Michael and the Gestmeister rocking out to Rabbie Burns: Yes, please.

Just don't do the Eightsome Reel too quickly or someone's nose might fall off.

THIS IS THE TRUTH ... I MEAN I RESPECT TNA FOR TRYING, BUT LETS BE SERIOUS, JUST READ AND YOU WILL SEE

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 12:50 PM EST [General]

Word on the street (and on the ‘net) is that Mrs. Foley’s baby boy is headed from the big time to the small time, from WWE to TNA.

My advice: Don’t do it, Mick.

To quote the great Bruce Mitchell (as I often do), TNA is like quicksand. No matter how good you were – no matter how good you are – the minute you get there, you start sinking. Kurt Angle was at the top of the card in WWE. Now he’s a third-rate comedian in TNA. Samoa Joe was a killing machine in ROH, perceived far and wide as the next big thing. Now he’s a whiny naïf in TNA.

That’s what happens when you get involved with people more concerned with keeping their jobs than doing them, when your company is owned by a mark and run by repeat failures. You go there thinking you’ll have some say, but either you don’t know as much as you think, or you know more than those who run the show and they resent it. If you’re really smart – like Kevin Nash – you mostly stay out of harm’s way. But otherwise, you get enveloped in the muck and mire and go down, down, down.

Name one person who came to TNA from WWE and means more now. Besides Gail Kim, that is, who immediately used fame gained in TNA to leverage a return to WWE.

WWE is the big show, and everybody knows it. Wrestlers like Team 3-D have said so, in print, while working for TNA. The only people in TNA who don’t want to go to WWE are those who can’t.

Mick, you might be disappointed by the way you were used/treated during your latter days at WWE. It might anger you that Triple H calls you “Homeless Harry” behind your back. Maybe your legacy isn’t regarded in the light it should be – or maybe it is, and that’s what really upsets you.

But if you’re concerned with your legacy, don’t go to TNA, because your legacy will fade. It will fade just as surely as Kurt Angle – an all-time great – is well on his way to being remembered as just another guy.

TNA doesn’t need Mick Foley, anyway. What they need is to create their own breakout star. But no one on that creative team is even remotely capable of doing it.

Memo to Dixie Carter: If you want to save your house, demolish it first. There is almost nothing good about your product, and you could count the productive employees on one hand. As I mentioned in an earlier column, TNA’s epitaph will be the mantra of those running it: “You just don’t get it.”

Thursday, August 28, 2008, 12:49 PM EST [General]

    GEENA'S BLOG

    Thursday August 28th

Good Morning everyone.  It's almost Friday whoohoo!  Tonight is my last happy hour at Prospect Bar and Lounge in La Jolla so come out!  We will be there from 6pm-8pm.  It's 1025 Prospect Ave in La Jolla come have fun!  Today's blog I wanted to read you a story.  It goes.

A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:

    For cutting the grass: $5.00
For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00
Baby-sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: $.25
    Taking out the garbage: $1.00
For getting a good report card: $5.00
For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00
    Total owed: $14.25

Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flashing through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she wrote:

For the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside me:
    No Charge

For all the nights that I've sat up with you, doctored and prayed for you:
    No Charge

For all the trying times, and all the tears that you've caused through the years:
    No Charge

For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the worries I knew were ahead:
    No Charge

For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose:
    No Charge

Son, when you add it up, the cost of my love is:
    No Charge.

When the boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were big tears in his eyes, and he looked straight at his mother and said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote: "PAID IN FULL".

I thought that was a cute story.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Xoxo- Geena the Latina
